Water fire extinguishers are suitable for use on fires involving solid combustibles, such as such as wood, paper, fabrics and other class A fire risks.
The water cools the fire and extinguishes it, penetrating into burning fabrics and deep into the core of the fire.
Water fire extinguishers are non-toxic and do not contain any harmful chemicals.
This makes them safe for use in kitchens, in areas where there are children or pets present, and near vulnerable adults.
The firefighting capacity of water is limited, so large water fire extinguishers are required to fight even small fires.
If your water extinguisher is to be used on or near electrical equipment, ensure that the ‘safe for use on electrical equipment’ symbol is printed on the front of the extinguisher.
This demonstrates that it has been tested on live electrical equipment up to 1000v in accordance with BS EN 3-7, and is therefore safe for this use.
Water mist fire extinguishers are ideal for this purpose, as they contain de-ionised water which will not conduct electricity, allowing them to pass the required di-electrical testing.
